Why One Company Video Usually Isn’t Enough
A company video can be useful.
But if it’s the only video your business has, I’d probably start somewhere else.
A lot of businesses come to us asking for one polished company overview video. Something that explains who they are, how they got started, what they believe in, and maybe gives people a quick look at the team.
There’s nothing wrong with that.
We make those videos.
But if nobody really understands what you do yet, how you help, or what they can actually hire you for, I’d argue there are probably more useful videos to make first.
Start with the questions your customers actually have
Before making a company overview video, I’d look at your website and social media and ask a few basic questions.
Do people clearly understand your services?
Do they know who those services are for?
Do they understand the problems you solve?
Can they see how you work?
Do they have any reason to trust that you know what you’re doing?
If the answer to most of those is no, that’s where I’d start.
Instead of putting all of your time into one longer company video, you may get more value from several pieces of short-form video content that each answer one question well.
That could be:
- A video explaining one of your core services
- A quick answer to a common customer question
- A video showing how your process works
- A customer problem you solve all the time
- A behind-the-scenes look at the work
- A short explanation of who a service is actually for
That content can live in a lot more places and do a lot more jobs.
One big video has one big limitation
Here’s the problem with making one company video and calling it done.
You put it on the homepage.
Maybe you post it on Facebook.
Maybe LinkedIn gets a turn.
Then what?
You can only post the same five-minute video so many times before people start wondering what's going on.
Short-form video gives you more flexibility.
Instead of one piece trying to explain everything, you can create multiple videos that each have one job.
That makes the content easier to watch, easier to share, and easier to use across different parts of your marketing.
Short-form video gives you more mileage
One production day can often create a surprisingly large amount of usable content.
Instead of making one long video, you might walk away with six, eight, or ten shorter pieces.
Now you have content for:
- Your website
- YouTube
- Paid social ads
- Email follow-up
- Sales conversations
That starts to become a real content library instead of one finished video sitting on a page hoping somebody clicks play.
For a lot of businesses, that is a much better place to start.
The company video still has a place
This isn’t an argument against company videos.
There are plenty of situations where a well made company overview or About Us video makes sense.
Once people understand what you do, your story matters more.
That’s where a company video can add personality, history, culture, and the human side of the business.
It becomes another layer.
The problem is when that layer is expected to do all the work.
If your website has no service videos, your social media has no useful video content, and customers are still trying to figure out what you actually sell, I probably wouldn’t make your origin story the first thing we tackle.
I’d rather build the foundation first.
Good video marketing is mostly about order
A lot of video marketing comes down to making the right thing at the right time.
Sometimes the business that calls asking for a company video absolutely needs a company video.
Sometimes we take a look and say, “We can make that. But I think these other pieces would be more useful first.”
That’s an important distinction.
Our job isn’t just to show up with cameras and make whatever somebody wrote down before the meeting.
It’s to figure out what the content is supposed to do and whether the thing being requested actually helps get there.
Sometimes that means a big polished production.
Sometimes it means eight short videos answering really boring questions.
The boring questions tend to be pretty useful.
If you’re not sure what video content you need, start there
If you know your business needs better video content but you’re not sure what should come first, that’s usually the bigger question.
Maybe you need a company video.
Maybe you need service videos.
Maybe you need short-form content for social media.
Maybe you need all of it, just not all at once.
Figuring out the order is the important part.
At Visual Creative Co., we help Michigan businesses plan and create photo and video content around what they actually need, not just what sounds good in a meeting.
Because making a video is easy.
Making the right video is the part worth thinking about.
